MPO is a Leukocyte inflammatory protein that is part of very strong anti-microbial system. In the anti-microbial system, MPO, hydrogen peroxide, and a halogen together generate Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) to digest foreign invaders such as bacteria, fungi, viruses and mycoplasma. PMN-Elastase can increase the MPO -H2O2's effencenty at destorying bacterial invaders.
If a cell’s antioxidative defense system fails, ROS can leak into extra-cellular space, inhibit leukocyte function, and damage cells. The MPO defense system can be inhibited by catalase, excess of hydrogen peroxide and other reducing substances.
Research area interests include inflammation, oxidative health, initiation and progression of CVD, myocardial infarction, and diabetes.
