Real-time PCR/RT-PCR Products for Gastrointestinal Pathogen Detection
Gastrointestinal (GI) pathogens consist of bacterial, viral, and parasitic groups. Bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens are caused by direct contact, indirect contact, and contaminated food and water. The most common pathogen is viral, which infects a host by introducing genetic material into the cell to produce more virus particles. Once the host cell bursts, the virus particles will then continue to infect other cells. Bacteria, once ingested, will continue to reproduce by binary fission; an asexual reproduction by a separation of the body into two new bodies. Parasites attach and thrive off their host, growing at a high rate. Symptoms of gastrointestinal pathogens include fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, muscle aches, headaches, and diarrhea. GI pathogen panels are used to test for the presence of multiple disease-causing pathogens in stool samples. ALPCO offers both DNA and RNA real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR/RT-PCR) solutions for the detection and/or differentiation of pathogens.
